Giulia and Jason Engagement Session

Ahh, Spring; you've gotta love it. Its especially nice when you get those warm mornings of sunshine and fresh spring smells, hinting that summer is just around the corner. It was that kind of morning when we met up with Giulia and Jason for a relaxed and fun engagement session at the beach in West Vancouver. When Giulia had booked their engagement session it was a downpour-ish, torrential rainy Vancouver day and she was concerned about how the weather would be on on the day of their session. I reassured her not to worry because we can photograph in all types of conditions and it turned out to be a super sunny morning. In fact, I think we were all a little shocked to see such great weather that it just set the tone for a super fun morning.

We had a great morning with you both and we are really looking forward to your wedding day,

Bernadette and Robin's Evening Wedding

Some of you may remember the engagement shots that we posted a few weeks ago of Bernadette and Robin, well they're married!!! On February 22nd these two made it official at Vancouver's Alibi Room.

Things began with stylish elegance at the Hotel Le Soleil, right downtown. Up on the 11th floor of this sumptuous hotel we met up with the Bernadette and Robin who were both calm and relaxed. I am sure for them knowing that things couldn't be more right (and the day well planned) they were totally at ease....and laughing as usual. We spent some time in the hotel with its European decor and Louis XVI style furniture creating some great images in a style that worked well with the classic elegance of our location.

Despite a dark and rainy evening, we went outside to take advantage of what must be the city's finest examples of Art Deco, the Marine Building. We spent just a few minutes near the entrance, covered from the rain before hopping in a cab to The Alibi Room.

The atmosphere in The Alibi Room was warm and cozy where Bernadette and Robin entered to see 80 of their closest family and friends cheering and welcoming them. The relaxed ceremony was perfect for the evening- The Alibi Room making for the perfect backdrop for this urban couple. After the ceremony the guests mingled in the candle lit room, before heading downstairs for a few quick family photos and then on to a tasty dinner.

What a great night! With the cold rainy weather outside and the restaurant awash in candles, it was an evening of warmth among good company to celebrate this really great couple.

And what about the cookies? Well, the common myth of how these two met was officially laid to rest that evening. As far as some guests knew, the story of how these two met was at a coffee shop, where they both simultaneously ordered the last cookie and had to discuss who would be awarded the last tasty treat. A very nice story, but it was just a story. The real story of how they met was told that night, to set the record straight during one of the loving toasts by a friend, a story of what happened that makes perfect sense for this professional young urban couple: they met at a place Where Singles Click ;-)

To celebrate the great cookie myth, Bernadette and Robin gave all of their guests what were quite possibly the most delectable chocolate chip cookies to have ever been baked! Yum!

Great work you two on a fantastic evening and congratulations on your marriage, a marriage of two people who are so wonderful together. We feel like it was a real privilege to be involved so closely in your wedding and being able to get to know you both so well.

Steve + Elizabeth: Engagement Session

On the very brisk Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago, we went out with Steve and Elizabeth and had a walk around Yaletown for their engagement session. Not only is Yaletown a great place to take photographs, but also a fab place to do some designer dog watching, so we invited Steve and Elizabeth to bring their puppy with them. Their little puppy Ollie had a great time visiting with other doggies, as well as being a super posing puppy!

We had a lovely morning (although chilly) with Steve and Elizabeth and we are happy to premiere their engagement session with our new slideshow.

Back from Las Vegas!

Hey Everyone! We've just come back from an intense 5 days at a photographers conference in Las Vegas and it was a blast! It was so exciting to be there and interact with some of the world's top photographers. We definitely picked up a few new and exciting ideas (which we'll ultimately be sharing with you!) and it was great to meet so many new people. Despite being super busy with the conference, we did find time to go out for a few spectacular meals, ride the exciting roller coaster at NYNY (we are huge roller coaster fans!) and Justin even took a few large format photographs along the Strip. Being a bit of an unusual camera, he tended to attract the attention of a few small crowds - even in the glitzy glam of Las Vegas.

It was a tiring action packed week away, so time to relax a bit, get some sleep and get caught up!

Engagement Session in the UBC Endowment Lands

Bernadette and Robin are so in love with each other and it shows! They just absolutely beam when they are in each others presence and we are so glad that we have had the opportunity to get to know them during their engagement. Being such a romantic couple it was very suiting that they chose a very mystical and enchanting portion of the UBC Endowment Lands for their engagement session with us. Many of us so often simply walk through a forest, not pausing to stop and listen. But we had the chance to really listen and reflect on the beauty of this space during their photo shoot.

We had a lot of fun with them and are excited about their wedding, coming up in just a few days.

Dani and Baby Lily

A few days ago I went to visit my friend Dani and her new little baby girl, Lily. Dani and I have been friends since we were 12 years old, so it was truly amazing to see one of my closest friends now as a Mom. It was certainly a shift for me to see her in this new role I had never seen her in before. Despite Dani being a little tired (as is to be expected), I can see that she is truly enjoying motherhood and will be a wonderful mother with a lot to give and teach her little girl. As you can probably tell, I was mesmerized! Although Lily is still so young, I can already see she has Dani's strength and unique sense of character. Having created maternity and baby photographs over the years, it was only natural for me to want to capture some of those first Mom + Daughter moments for Dani. Anyway, here are a few photographs from my first visit and baby photo session with Lily Viola, 4 weeks young.

A Snowy Engagement Celebration

We met the lovely Samineh at a wedding we were photographing a few months back. She enjoyed being able to see us as work and seemlessly blend into the day to capture the essence of it all. To celebrate their engagement, Samineh and Reza hosted a lively engagement party for their closest friends and family.

While the guests were dancing up a storm inside the Vancouver Rowing Club, outside was being covered in beautiful blanket of fluffy snow. So pretty!

The Persian Knife Dance! This playful part of the evening was where Samineh and Reza tried to retrieve a cake knife from their guests so they could cut the cake. The dance started with one of their guests who danced to an upbeat Persian song with the knife as a show piece and money was then offered to try and get the knife. Once the dancer happily received the money, the cake knife was passed on to the next dancer to show off their dance moves. After some back and forth, more dancers and cheers from the entertained guests, Samineh and Reza finally were given the knife and were able to cut their gorgeous, chocolate covered cake.

Congratulations to Samineh and Reza on your engagement! It was a party to be remembered! :-)

Steff's little sister and boyfriend came all the way from Germany this year, and in recent past years, we've been away either living in England or traveling, so it's an extra special Christmas for us this year! Ted + Agatha

A sunny autumn wedding near the beach with 35 close friends and family, doesn’t that sound nice? Well it was! Ted and Agatha we married this autumn in a small wooden gazebo near the Beach House in West Vancouver. They had written vows for each other that were spoken full love and warmth. And because their vows were so emotionally charged, they practiced their vows the day before to make sure they would not stumble on these powerful words during their ceremony. The guests hung on to each and every word as they both opened their hearts through words for all to witness. It really was a beautiful and moving wedding for us to be a part of.

Beautiful exchange of vows...

Ted and Agatha were greeted by her parents, in a tradition that is common at many Polish weddings. They were presented with 2 shot glasses, one filled with water the other filled with straight vodka, but not knowing which was which. The saying is that whoever chooses the shot with vodka, ends up being "head of the house." With his soured expression after downing the shot, everyone thought it was to be Ted...but it was Agatha who walked away as champion:) And then the party started!

Lovestruck

Thanks to all of you who came to see us at Lovestruck. We really enjoyed chatting with you and answering your questions. And if we didn't get to meet you, we'd love to hear from you, just drop us a line. We're booking up quickly for 2009 and are now booking for 2010, so get in touch soon if you're thinking of having Justin and I photograph your wedding day!

Lovestruck was a super fun, cocktail party inspired event and all the brides had a great time having their hair and nails done, taking in the workshops, enjoying the fashion shows, eating tasty canapes and also meeting so many of the cities top notch vendors.

Despite being a really long day for us, we both had a lovely time meeting up with so many great people and hearing about lots of unique and exciting wedding day plans. We are really looking forward to being involved with Reflection Events for Lovestruck 2009! Congratulations to Angela Girard for putting on a super event this year.

Vancouver Fall Wedding Show

It was a perfect weekend for attending the Vancouver Wedding Show at the Vancouver Convention Center this past weekend; it was drizzly outside and while the leaves were falling, many couples came out to the show who are planning their 2009/2010 wedding. We met many great people and would like to thank everyone who came to visit us at the show.

A nice little additional surprise for us was seeing our booth shown and an interview with Justin featured on CTV news on Sunday night. CTV was looking at the Wedding Show to see if current concerns about the economy are having any effect on the wedding industry.

Steff and I worked really hard to get our booth organized and ready for the show and we are glad that it was so well received. The only real downside was having to sacrifice Hallowe’en night this year to be down at the Convention centre setting up, fortunately we took full advantage of The Parade of Lost Souls the weekend before which is always an artful and scarrrrry night! :-)

If you missed us at the Vancouver Wedding Show, not to worry we will be at the Vancouver Club on November 16th for the much anticipated Lovestruck Event. I believe that tickets are still available and it promises to be a fantastic event which is not to be missed!

Emily + Brian: Engagement session

Last weekend we had a super fun morning engagement session with the lovely Emily + Brian and their Oh-So-Cute puppy, Stella. She came along for the photo shoot as well- in fact she stole the show for as long as we would let her! The sweet, Autumn crisp air made for a romantic, yet playful photo session, which we all enjoyed.

We are really looking forward to what is bound to be a fun filled wedding next summer with Emily and Brian!

Jandy + Chad's Wedding

In the week leading up to Jandy and Chad's wedding this summer, all it did was downpour with rain. While most people dream of having nice weather on their wedding day, things were not looking good. Despite the forecast, wedding-weather-dreams came to life as the skies cleared into a gorgeous blue that set the stage for a beautiful and sunny ocean side wedding. The wedding-weather fairies weren't the only fairies busy that day, it turned out that the tooth fairies had to be called in as well! Jandy's daughter, Asia, lost one of her front teeth just before the ceremony on the morning of the wedding! Being worried about how she would look, especially in the photographs, she made a quick adjustment and started smiling again- this time with her mouth closed:) The rest of the day went great, all the time and planning came together to produce a super summer wedding in Parksville at Tigh Na Mara Resort. Congratulations Jandy and Chad!

One of the unique details they had planned, was to have an extra special ring-bearer. They weren't sure if she would walk straight down the aisle to meet Chad, but she did and with a great big smile and her tail wagging proudly! Sydney is Chad's best friend and a beautiful Golden Retriever.

Surprise Wedding in Vancouver!!

When we first met up with Louise we were pleased to hear her Manchester accent. hyperfocus UK was set up in Manchester by us in 2004 and we were based there for almost three years shooting lots of amazing weddings in Northern England and Scotland. We really fell in love with Manchester and the people, so hearing Louise's accent brought back all the warm friendly memories of being in the UK. We were off to a good start!

Louise was excited about her 'surprise' wedding to Dean, of course it was to be a surprise for the guests, not for Dean:) The plan was that the two of them were to travel through Italy for a couple of weeks before the wedding and they would tell their friends and family that they were going to Italy to get married, but that they would have a reception party in Vancouver when they got back.

A few days after they returned from Italy they had a party in the lovely reception space above the Stanley Park Chapel, hors d'oeuvres, Cupcakes, and drinks were being served and guests were chatting and mingling, suspecting nothing out of the ordinary. Dean was playing host while Louise was, unbeknownst to the guests, in the bridal suite downstairs getting ready. About half an hour after the party was underway Dean went onto the mezzanine of the reception area and announced that everyone should go downstairs. There were some confused looks, but people politely finished their drinks and made their way downstairs.

Once the group had moved downstairs they were taken into the Chapel and seated, and wow, were they confused now!! Dean stood at the front and made the surprise announcement; that he and Louise had actually not been married in Italy and that the real wedding was going to happen right there, right now! All the guests were shocked, surprised and excited!! It was a total surprise!!

A few minutes later Louise made her entry in a gorgeous dress that she designed herself and stunning Venetian shoes; the wedding was underway! It was a friendly and casual ceremony by Rev. Allan Burnett followed by a horse and carriage ride through Stanley Park (that we photographed using a Bicycle for transport, click here for details) and then a party back in the reception area of the Stanley Park Chapel. Everyone had a super evening and danced the night away while the fireworks went off over English bay.

Green Choices for Transportation

hyperfocus wedding photography Gets A Little Greener!!!

An environmentally conscious outlook can reach all aspects of your wedding planning, including your selection of a wedding photographer. The two of us have always led a pretty environmentally conscious existence, it's just what we do. It's not usually something we go around telling people about. I suppose living in the Commercial Drive neighborhood of Vancouver, it's easy to forget that not everyone uses a push mower to cut the lawn, makes a conscious choice to ride a bicycle or skateboard (instead of a car) and likes to buy both local and organic foods. Anyhow, I also suppose it is not so surprising that our mind set would spill over into our business too. With that said, we did recently have had a couple of things happen at hyperfocus that we felt were noteworthy on the 'Green' front; both to do with transportation.

The first item our Green transportation initiative involved our first ever wedding photographed using a bicycle for transporting us and our gear. This was really great fun! With the help of Victor Cuevas at Rain City Bikes, who is the Vancouver specialist in Dutch bicycles, we managed to get ourselves set up with a Dutch bike called the Bakfiets Box Bike, now this is one cool bike! It is basically a bicycle with a large (good looking) wooden box on the front which can officially hold up to 200lbs. This was the perfect solution for photographing Louise and Dean's Wedding, who got married at the Stanley Park Chapel and then spent a little over an hour going around Stanley Park in a horse and carriage. The idea was to stop at a few places on the horse and carriage ride and take some photos of the two of them. So while they were in the horse and carriage I pedaled the bike, all our gear, and Steff nearby. It was great; quiet and clean (no fossil fuels being burned here, just my leg muscles on the hills) and with no worries about finding parking or following the horse and carriage. And thanks to clever Dutch bicycle engineering (and an internal 8 speed hub) the bike was super easy to ride, steer and pedal even with all the weight, in fact the bike actually handled better with weight than empty, amazing! We really enjoyed being able to work and use the Bakfiets Bike and since hyperfocus is also an equal opportunity employer, the next time we do this it's going to be Steff who is pedaling me ;-)

The second thing is that we decided to join the Vancouver Car Cooperative. We had been looking around at new vehicles and thinking about what kind of car to lease for the business, when it was suggested that we check out the car Co-Op. As it turned out the Co-Op made a lot of sense partially because of the neighborhood we live in; there are at least two dozen Co-Op cars very nearby. So we initially decided to join on a trial basis to see how it goes. It's going very well!

Now whenever we need a car we simply book one ahead of time or a few minutes before we need it, no real problems so far. All the cars are generally less than 4 years old, very well maintained and there is a nice variety of vehicles to choose from depending on what we are doing, whether its shooting a wedding or doing other shoots involving extensive lighting equipment and props. It is a smart way to be involved in sustainable vehicle ownership that makes a significant reduction in the number of cars on the road and it just makes sense on so many levels. It really feels great to be a part of this community cooperative that is really quite unique in North America. I am sure that in 15-20 years time this concept will become common place in communities everywhere.

A Wonderfully Romantic Cadboro Bay Wedding

Full of so much love!!!......

That's how we can best describe Beth and Dan's wedding. Their wedding day had a marvelous summer-time, romantic feeling to it with an absolutely gorgeous, blue sky sunny day. We were very excited to photograph their wedding day! Beth and Dan are very good friends of ours and by the nature of what we do, we knew that we would have the special position being so close to them on their wedding day! What friend could ask for more?! We felt so lucky to be immediately nearby to the most intimate emotions of their day.

With the sailboats behind them, Beth and Dan were married by the sea in Victoria at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, with all their closest family and friends surrounding them. During the ceremony, both Beth and Dan's parents read beautiful poems about love, including "Home and Love" by Robert Service read by Beth's Dad. And her Mom lovingly read one of her very own poems to the bride and groom.

Beth and Dan both grew up in Cadboro Bay, having had many fun days playing at the beach or at Gyro Park as children, skateboarding or sailing in the bay as teenagers. It was absolutely the perfect setting for their wedding to take place!

Kelly + Dave: Engagement Session in Steveston

What a gorgeous sunny afternoon we had with Kelly + Dave out in Steveston. The two love spending time out there walking along the shoreline path at Garry Point Park, so it was the perfect place to have an engagement photo session with them. The sun was so warm and bright, which lent itself nicely to a relaxed, 'hot days of summer' themed photo session. Contrary to popular belief a bright high sun is actually not flattering light to photograph people in, but we had a number of tricks up our sleeves to shoot in those conditions... so off we went and created some great and varied images of Kelly + Dave. They later said they were quite nervous at first when we started photographing them, not having been in front of a camera very much beforehand. But then Dave said that right after the first few shots, they instantly felt totally comfortable with us and it shows in their photographs. We find that many of our clients have not spent much time with professional photographers before, which is why we think it's just great to have a fun and relaxed engagement session before the wedding day, because it really helps to feel more confident on your wedding day with the tips we can give during the engagement session. Plus, best of all, it's great to have some professional photographs to celebrate your engagement and have some great images of the two of you outside the wedding day. Anyhow, we really had a lot of fun with Dave and Kelly and are looking forward to their wedding later this summer. :-)

To shake things up a bit, we had a special little surprise for Dave. When we rolled into Steveston to find some options to Garry Point park in case of rain, we found this old, vintage garage! We knew that Dave is training to be a specialized truck mechanic, so we thought this would be a perfect little add-on location to their engagement photo session!

Simone's 20th Birthday Party

Here is something a little different. We had a call from a mother on the North Shore saying that she loved our Wedding photography and how would we feel about photographing her daughter's 20th Birthday Party. We have photographed plenty of events in the past, especially for families that we've captured weddings for, but this small party for a group of girlfriends at the house was just a little different. The event was very intimate, which created some extra challenges for capturing the event in a non-obtrusive, photo-journalistic style. When there are less than 10 people in a small room it can be more difficult to be inconspicuous! But we figured it out pretty quickly and captured some great shots that create a fascinating social record of the event.

Beth+Dan=Fun

Last year we received a phone call from Beth who announced to us her engagement to Dan. We were so excited for them!!! They are good friends of ours- Steff and Beth grew up together and we got to know Dan really well at our wedding in Cuba a few years back. We nervously waited to hear the date they had chosen and thankfully we had the date still open and they asked us to be their wedding photographers! Now, we were even more excited, because we know that as wedding photographers we get to spend a lot of time with the bride and groom on their wedding day and this time its with long time friends! We feel so lucky to be a special part of their day.

We went over to Victoria for their engagement photo session and wandered around downtown Victoria having fun, walking around and taking pictures. At one point we were on Government Street in Victoria with all the tourists staring and anxiously wondering if Beth + Dan were celebrities!

We had a great time photographing you both and we are really looking forward to what is sure to be a fabulous Victoria wedding in July!

Toilet Paper Wedding Dresses!!??

Over the years we have seen some pretty amazing wedding dresses in Canada and the UK, but here is a dress design with something a little different. We recently came across a very unusual competition; to make a wedding dress out of toilet paper!!! Anyhow, without giving too much away, check out the article here.

We're not sure though how wedding dresses made from loo roll would fair here in rainy Vancouver. I think the dress designers here would need to come up with something a little better suited for the climate. I think we can flush the practicality of this dress idea right down the toilet! :-)

Our New Wedding Photography Gallery

Bit of a spring cleaning really and what a difference it makes! Not only are the new wedding photographs bigger, they look as though they will pop off the screen (which we love!). We have posted many new images, but kept some of what we hear are your previous faves as well.

We are Back in Vancouver!!

Well, simply said, we are back.

It's been a wonderful journey and a great experience to have lived and photographed weddings in Manchester, England for 2.5 years and then traveled home the 'long way around'. We are now happy to be back and settled in the lovely city of Vancouver and are ready for an exciting and fun wedding season this year.

For those of you who do not know us, we are a dynamic, fun, and funky, yet elegant husband + wife photography team. We photograph the moments of your wedding day in a photojournalistic style, just capturing the day as it is happening.
