I was  just listening to  The Q on CBC with Jian Ghomeshi and he had a guest on his show who speaking about a town in Haiti that won’t be getting any aid since their area was not as badly hit as others. Still, everyone is living out on the streets because many of the buildings were so poorly built, that they are on the verge of collapse and completely unsafe. This prompted me to want to tell you about a charity that we donated to yesterday called Architecture for Humanity. Their focus is to go into communities in need and rebuild buildings using quality materials so the construction will last and be safe in the future. They are truly an upstanding charity worth giving to and they are involved in so many projects that are soooo worth while, even in our local Vancouver.   Thanks, steff

At this time of year everyone is thinking about giving and how to help those in need. So recently, Justin and I decided to donate to a charity that is a soup kitchen in Namibia for children with HIV.

A few years ago, Eileen Greene—a Camosun College nursing instructor brought a group of students to Africa for an international experience. They learned that there was medication available for those with HIV, but the meds had to be taken with food otherwise the strong medication can wreak havoc on their system and most (without food) decide to discontinue taking the meds due to the unpleasant side effects. Eileen was horrified to hear that the HIV meds were available, but really only to those who had food.  That prompted her to create the Home of Good Hope—a soup kitchen that now feeds two hundred orphaned children whose parents have died of HIV.

We were proud to be a part of this year’s charity dinner and fundraiser was held at Bon Rouge Restaurant in Victoria.  Our contribution feeds 175 of the kids for a whole month! When we heard that news we were just ecstatic, over the moon, totally excited (read: BIG Dance of Joy by yours truly!!) It feels so amazing to know that a few hours of our time creating beautiful photographs here in Vancouver has such a huge impact on the lives of these amazing children on the other side of the world.

Now those are some warm fuzzies on a cold winter’s day!

We met with Travis and Janna over a year ago at their home which was full of large paintings and photographs. We learned that they were both creatives and Travis, being a  graduate from the Western Academy of Photography (one of Canada’s foremost schools of photography), we felt honoured that they chose us as their wedding photographers. We are so pleased to hear that contemporaries in our field truly value our work. For their wedding, it was really important for them to put a mark on their wedding, so they created a consistent brand for their wedding right from the beginning, starting with a wedding logo, amazing printed pieces of artwork and it all even tied in with the decor on the cake. vancouver wedding dress

While Janna had the vintage 50’s car for her wedding transportation, Travis and Co. had urban-cool wedding transport; the SkyTrain.

Their wedding coat of arms designed by Travis. It’s a Danish tradition to give a special wedding cake to their guests (that’s what was inside those boxes). How cute are these buttons! We wore ours proudly all day. The ‘peas+ carrots’ button was a hit, but we liked the ‘Scrabble’ button too. And ‘I Heart J+T’!  Super fun!

First dance! This was especially important as Janna had badly broken her leg and torn all her ligaments in her foot in January and was unable to walk for most of the year. She was one very determined women to walk down the aisle this summer, so she worked really hard at rehabilitating her leg and against many odds, she achieved it! This was their first dance together as husband + wife, but also with her now rehabilitated leg. Go girl!!

Here is what Travis + Janna had to say after they saw their photographs:

“Thank you so much for all your hard work. The photos area amazing! The quality is unreal!! You two did such an incredible job of capturing the special moments of our big day. We can’t thank you enough!!”

Thanks guys! :-)   steff + justin

Dani and Baby Lily

February 10, 2009
A few days ago I went to visit my friend Dani and her new little baby girl, Lily. Dani and I have been friends since we were 12 years old, so it was truly amazing to see one of my closest friends now as a Mom. It was certainly a shift for me to see her in this new role I had never seen her in before. Despite Dani being a little tired (as is to be expected), I can see that she is truly enjoying motherhood and will be a wonderful mother with a lot to give and teach her little girl. As you can probably tell, I was mesmerized! Although Lily is still so young, I can already see she has Dani’s strength and unique sense of character. Having created maternity and baby photographs over the years, it was only natural for me to want to capture some of those first Mom + Daughter moments for Dani. Anyway, here are a few photographs from my first visit and baby photo session with Lily Viola, 4 weeks young.
